Question
I was wondering why the Dr. ordered a CT Scan and a Facet injection of cortisone? Over the last several years I have suffered 2 car accidents. Right now I have problems with my leg, back, hip, side of my neck and shoulder. I was also told I have carpal tunnel in both wrists and arthritis too. Any suggestions? My age is 50
Answer
It is really important that you talk with your treating doctor so you understand exactly what is your condition is and what is happening to help you. We can explain what a CT Scan and Facet injection are, which may increase your understanding.
Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan) is a specialized form of X Ray examination for diagnostic purposes. By having a CT Scan your doctor can find out concise information about what is actually causing your pain, and therefore more effectively treat it.
A Facet injection is a nonsurgical treatment that can temporarily 'block' pain in your neck and back from inflammation or irritation of the facet joints in your spine. The procedure has two purposes. First, it can be used as a diagnostic test to see if the pain is actually coming from your facet joints; and second, it can be used as a treatment to relieve inflammation and pain. The cortisone reduces inflammation which breaks the pain cycle. With pain under control, you can begin a rehabilitative exercise program, planned to suit your individual needs by a physiotherapist working with your treating doctor...
You mention that you also have arthritis. Suitable exercises, strangely enough, are important as they free up stiff joints and prevent more stiffness. A physiotherapist may be helpful guiding one in the correct exercises for the specific problem. Weight Control is also important, as extra weight places an added load on painful joints. If you make sure that you have adequate pain relief, the stiffness can resolve a little by doing the exercise regularly. The links below may be helpful to you in learning more about your problems
