I was involved in a car accident 4 weeks ago when my car was turned upside down. I had chest contusions but no major injury. Now I am experiencing neck tightness and mild pain, head discomfort and mild nausea. I've been told that this is due to whiplash and/or tension. Do you agree that this could be tension related?
Be kind to yourself as you have had a body shock, and tension and stress are all a part of the post-trauma experience.
People who experience whiplash may develop one or more of the following symptoms, usually within the first two days after the accident:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches
- Pain in the shoulder or between the shoulder blades
- Low back pain
- Pain or numbness in the arm and/or hand
- Dizziness
- Ringing in the ears or blurred vision
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
- Irritability, sleep disturbances, fatigue
How whiplash injuries occur is clearly understood, but the extent and type of injuries varies greatly. The diagnosis of whiplash is often one of exclusion. Most injuries are to soft tissues such as the disks, muscles and ligaments, and cannot be seen on standard X-rays.
Treatment for individuals with whiplash may include pain medications, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and a cervical collar (usually worn for 2 to 3 weeks). Range of motion exercises, physical therapy, and cervical traction may also be prescribed. Supplemental heat application may relieve muscle tension.
