Last week, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) announced that it would soon be starting two trials of the swine flu vaccine in children aged 6 months to 17 years.
Early results from 500 healthy adult and elderly volunteers involved in the first swine flu vaccine study have shown no safety concerns. NIAID concurred with the recommendation of an independent safety monitoring committee that trials of the swine flu vaccine should begin in children. One pediatric trial will enroll up to 650 children who will get different doses of the swine flu vaccine in two shots spaced three weeks apart. The other pediatric trial will evaluate the effects of giving the swine flu vaccine before, after, or at the same time as the seasonal flu vaccine.
