Question

I've cut back my smoking to only a few a day, and now I'm smoking low tar cigarettes. Does that mean my risk of lung cancer is lessened?

Answer

Sorry - your efforts are not helping you much, except in getting you ready to quit completely. We have reported in the past that even a few cigarettes a day still put you at risk of having a hart attack (MI) or dying from some other cause. Now a new publication in the British Medical Journal shows that the smoking-related increase in lung cancer is just as common in people who smoke medium tar, low tar, or very low tar cigarettes. So there's only one solution - give up completely!
