I am scheduled for umbilical hernia surgery shortly. I'm 50, and in good health. How long must I wait before returning to work?

Rehabilitation time varies in each individual, and is dependant on such things as age, physical health prior to surgery, mental attitude to rehabilitation, lifestyle, type of work etc. It's important to be guided by your own surgeon, who knows you and your condition.
Under most circumstances following umbilical, inguinal (one or both sides), or femoral hernia repair, patients are permitted to drive (if licensed) in about 2-3 days. People's job descriptions and duties do vary. With a more sedentary job (desk or office employment), patients may safely return to work at any time they desire (2-3 days in most cases including driving to and from work).
Workers involved in more physical activity, such as light laborers, can usually return to work (unrestricted in most cases) after only 10 days to 2 weeks. Heavy laborers may, sometimes, require 3 weeks before returning to full job activity, but they may pursue light activity and gentle work much sooner.
