Forgiveness can be taught
Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
People can be taught to let go of unresolved hurts and experience better mental and physical health as a result.
The Stanford Forgiveness Projects are a large ongoing study into teaching forgiveness and what impact this can have on health. In one study involving 259 adults, forgiveness training was made available in 90 minute sessions over six weeks. This makes it the largest study of its kind.
Seventy per cent reported decreases in their feelings of hurt, 13 per cent found a reduction in anger, and 27 per cent had fewer physical symptoms of stress like pain, stomach upset, dizziness and so on. Most of the group said they were now more willing to forgive in the future. Forgiveness can be taught by lectures, guided imagery, cognitive reasoning and discussion, say the researchers. Evidently this work has important applications to health. For more, visit the website www.learningtoforgive.com.
