Look after your skin

Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

There is always plenty you can do to take care of your skin, whatever your age, says a leading US dermatologist.
Thanks to self-help and modern technology, no-one need ever look older than their years, says Dr Marianne O'Donoghue, a dermatologist at Rush-Presbyterian St Luke's Medical Center, in Chicago. The two most important things you can do are to wear a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, everyday, and also to drink lots of water to keep the skin hydrated.

Apart from this, there are different skin problems with each decade of life. Over 40, you'll note that oil production diminishes, so moisturising becomes even more important. This is a good time to start a product with alpha hydroxy acids, as this removes dead, outer layers of skin, giving a fresher appearance.

Over 50, skin begins to lose its plumpness and tone. You may begin to develop age spots - and always report any suspicious looking blemishes to your dermatologist, in case of skin cancer. A technology like injectable collagen might give a more youthful appearance, says Dr O'Donoghue. At age 60 and beyond, wrinkling becomes increasingly common - but new techniques like laser skin resurfacing can help treat your wrinkles and any long-term sun damage.
