Simple advice on weight loss

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

Recent work on animals suggest that weight control is simple, although challenging
There is no shortage of theories on obesity and how to shed excess pounds. But researchers at the University of South Florida reveal the answer is simple - life-long calorie restriction. Research in monkeys shows that those who practice life-long calorie restraint keep to a healthy weight, are generally healthier and live longer than animals who eat what they want.

The message is clear - watch your calories long-term if you want to keep to a healthy weight. If you find weight creeping on, cut back - ten per cent calorie reduction is enough to produce results. The researchers say that there is still much to be learned about weight control, appetite and diet. It may be that one day new knowledge will lead to drugs that can mimic the effect of calorie restriction. In the meantime, discipline and watchfulness remain the key to weight loss.
