Exercise improves quality of life

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

Taking up regular exercise enhances physical and mental quality of life, says a new study.
The benefits of exercise for health are well known. But incorporating more activity into your routine requires some commitment. Maybe news of a study from doctors at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign will help.

They studied a group who remained physically active following a six month program of walking and stretching and toning exercises. Assessments were made at one and five years making this the longest study on exercise and quality of life. Improvements were seen in self-esteem, physical functioning and even happiness and contentment.

This is an important study for older people. Many believe they should reduce their physical activity as the years go by. In fact, the reverse is the case. The level of exercise in this study is not hard to acheive. A daily brisk walk can be well worth the investment in time and effort in terms of your quality of life.
