Dealing with restless legs

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

There are treatments available for people who have restless leg syndrome.
Interrupted sleep and daytime fatigue are the two commonest effects of restless legs syndrome (RLS), a hard to describe condition in which there is an irresistible urge to move the legs. Those affected talk of a crawly, ticklish sensation in the legs which can only be relieved by movement. Bed partners are often affected too, just as much as if someone is snoring next to them.

Doctors at the University of Michigan have taken on the problem of RLS, pointing out that there is often an accompanying disorder called periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) which causes jerking of the legs during sleep and compounds the problem. The doctors look first for non-medical approaches, such as reviewing medication that could cause RLS and advising on tobacco or alcohol consumption, for these can worsen the condition. Wearing long socks in bed and taking a hot bath before retiring can help. Relaxation, acupuressure and massage are also useful. If these techniques don't work, then medications used for treating Parkinson's disease can be tried, for increasing dopamine levels seems to help RLS. Vitamin E, folate, magnesium and iron supplements have also been found useful.
