Better treatment needed for constipation

Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

Laxatives should not be the only option for constipation, says a leading British expert.
Around a quarter of the UK population suffers from constipation at some time. It can cause considerable discomfort and may be a symptom of a serious digestive disorder (always get any change in bowel habit checked out). Dr Michael Kamm, of St Mark's Hospital, Harrow, England, says that treatment of constipation should not be limited to laxatives.

Taking a laxative does not always bring the expected relief and increasing dietary fiber, which is often recommended, can cause increased bloating but little improvement in bowel function. He suggests that behavioral therapy can be very effective as an alternative. The patient learns specific exercises focused on the gut, and reduces use of laxatives. This gives a sense of better control over the body. There are also new drugs that work on peristalsis - the natural movement of the gut. These are not yet widely available in Europe but could offer a new option in the future.
