Even thought irritable bowel syndrome is very common, those affected tend not to talk about it.
People are often reluctant to seek help for conditions involving bowel function. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a particular example. It accounts for about three million doctor visits a year in the US, say doctors at The Mayo Clinic, yet IBS is not often discussed.
IBS involves abdominal pain, cramps, and changes in bowel function, being dominated by either constipation or diarrhea. Bloating and gas are common features, and women are more likely to suffer IBS than men are. If you are affected, you should have the doctor take a complete medical history and you'll need a full physical exam and tests. Self-help such as drinking plenty of water, regular meals and maybe fiber supplements should bring relief. There are also medications which can slow the rate at which food moves through the intestine, while antispasmodic drugs and antidepressants may also be effective.
