Congratulations, Diabetics!

Robert W. Griffith, MD

All you type 2 diabetic patients deserve congratulations - or at least, most of you. It seems that, between 1997 and 2005, the percentage of you with cardiovascular disease decreased by 11%. This number came from the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

In another report in the same issue of the M&M Weekly we read that the percentage of diabetics who check their blood sugar at least once a day has risen during the same time period - it now exceeds the 61% rate set by the Healthy People 2010 national objective.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of people with diabetes. The trend reported here is most encouraging, especially coupled with the improvement in self-monitoring. Well done, diabetics, and all those who have helped them to achieve this milestone.
