  ABOUT DIABETES
Diabetes is the term given to disruption of control of the blood glucose by the hormone insulin. This hormone is produced by special groups of cells, called islets, in the pancreas, a gland situated behind the stomach. Inadequate insulin production, or a lack of sensitivity of body tissues to the effects of insulin, causes the blood glucose to increase to levels when sugar 'spills over' into the urine. The Diabetes Center discusses diabetes treatment, symptoms, and its two different categories -- type 1 and type 2 diabetes -- in its news, articles, and Q&A sections.
