New memory aid helps people with dementia

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

An interactive multimedia computer system is being used to help dementia patients share old memories with their carers.
Although people with dementia have problems remembering recent events, their memory of the past often stays intact. Researchers in Scotland, supported by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council have used this in developing a system called CIRCA (Computer Interactive Reminiscence and Conversation Aid) which helps patients get more out of social interactions with their carers.

CIRCA is an interactive multimedia computer system composed of a touch-screen which can allow the user to select images, sound or video clips relating to categories such as cinema or local life that can bring out memories of the past. Trials of CIRCA with patients in care homes, day care and in their own homes have so far been very promising, with patients having more meaningful interactions with their carers based on bringing memories of the past to life.
