How to deal with a food binge

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

Experts at the Mayo Clinc give some tips on how to overcome an overeating episode.
If you are trying to lose weight, you may be dismayed if you have a slip and overindulge - known as a 'binge' or 'splurge'. What to do? It's tempting to junk the diet because you've clearly failed. But Mayo Clinic experts say it is best to forgive yourself and just move on. You must accept that there will be setbacks.

Avoiding your favorite foods and skipping meals will not help you. They are more likely to fuel your craving and lead to even more overeating. Stay focused - healthy foods, smart portions. A rich dinner can be followed by a low calorie day. What triggered the overeating? If it was stress, you could try another way, such as phoning a friend or going for a walk. And look for a way of incorporating your favorite foods - enjoy them in a 'safe' setting, where you are less likely to over-indulge. Do not avoid them altogether. And keep positive - all successes, however small, are worthy of celebration. This will build your confidence so you are better able to recover from future binges.
