Soyfoods align with heart guidelines
Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
The American Heart Association has made new recommendations which emphasise the importance of soy. Foods high in fiber, leaner animal products and more fish lie at the heart of the American Heart Association (AHA) new guidelines on eating for a heart health. Soy containing foods fit the bill - they're high in fiber, non-animal protein and have vitamins and minerals but low saturated fat and no cholesterol.
The AHA has specifically recognized the benefit from replacing meat with soy protein when it comes to improving cholesterol profile. In a recent analysis, it was found that such replacements could decrease heart disease risk by six per cent. More research shows that adding soy products reduces heart disease risk by up to ten per cent. The impact of including soy in your diet might be significant for your heart. Good sources include soy burgers and tofu as well as soy milk, cheese and yoghurt.
