The dangers of lupin flour
Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
Those who have peanut allergy would do well to avoid lupin flour.
An allergy to peanuts can be life-threatening, which is why so many foods now bear warning labels. According to a report from the Royal Free Hospital, London, those with peanut allergy may also have problems with lupin flour, which is used as a replacement for soya flour in some European countries.
The report concerns a 25 year old woman who had an allergic reaction to a meal containing lupin flour in a batter for onion rings. She knew she had a severe allergy to peanuts, but this particular meal had been declared safe. Evidently there was some kind of cross-over allergic reaction. This is just one case, of course, but it does suggest that those who know themselves to be allergic to peanuts should also avoid lupin flour products.
