Minor depression can lead to major problems

Symptoms of minor depression persisting for two weeks or more are likely to develop into a worse condition, according to a new study.
Clinical depression is a common problem which can severely impair a person's quality of life. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University and elsewhere now reveal how the condition can perhaps be caught earlier - if more attention is paid to so-called minor depression.

They studied a group of 1,634 individuals for occurrence of minor depression - a state of sadness and lack of interest in things persisting for at least two weeks. The study found that 19 per cent of those with minor depression went on to develop clinical depression. Physical health was also a factor. Those diagnosed with cancer were more likely to experience minor depression. But those who had heart problems, diabetes and arthritis did not seem more likely to develop clinical depression, although this has been found in other research. Although most people with minor depression do not seek treatment, these findings suggest it could be worthwhile doctors screening for depression in those attending for other things, as they may be able to stop the condition from developing.
