Self-help strategies can complement antidepressant therapy

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

Five self-help rules can help you deal with depression and prevent a recurrence.
While antidepressants can be very effective, self-help has a big role to play in helping to deal with depression say doctors at the Mayo Clinic. They present five simple rules which can make you feel a lot better. First, up to half an hour of daily physical activity will improve mood. Eating regular meals, including plenty of whole grains and fish, such as salmon, halibut and tuna, is helpful too. The omega-3 fatty acids in these cold-water fish have been shown to improve the symptoms of depression.

Regular bedtimes with around eight hours of sleep may be helpful, and it is important to control stress. Maybe you could try simplifying your routine and taking a break when you need it. And finally, stay connected with others - for social ties will give you the sense of meaning and purpose that can help beat depression. You may also look for meaning in spiritual experiences. Research has shown that belief often helps people cope with negative experiences which might otherwise lead to depression. The self-help approach is important, because even if you are on antidepressants, it may take some time before you feel the benefit.
