Family routines and rituals promote good health

Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

A review of 50 years of family psychology concludes that routines and rituals benefit both physical and mental health.
As you begin preparations for Christmas and other winter-time festivities, be encouraged by the fact that you are probably doing something positive for your health! Researchers at Syracuse University have just reviewed half a century of research on routine, ritual and family psychology.

They distinguish between routine - which is a pattern of behaviour - and ritual, which has more emotional content, symbolic communication and creates powerful memories. Routine is found to be beneficial to health - especially where children are concerned. People sleep better and have fewer infections when they have a good daily routine.

Most rituals revolve around mealtimes - whether it be the regular weekend dinner, or a special time like Thanksgiving, Christmas or Passover. Such rituals cement family relationships, giving social support that promotes both mental and physical health. It's something to bear in mind as you entertain family and friends over Christmas and New Year.
