All is not lost if erectile dysfunction medication does not work
Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
Although medication for erection problems usually works, adding a second therapy helps if it does not. Sildenafil and related drugs are effective treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED), a problem which has a myriad of causes, from smoking and cancer treatment to heart disease and diabetes. But they don't work for everyone, cautions Professor Jack Mydio of Temple University School of Medicine. However, in this situation, combination therapy may be an answer.
Non-surgical treatments such as pumps, injections or urethral suppositories can be added to medication to get the right result. Prof Mydio is working on a book on this topic, as well as planning a study that will look at how men respond to combination therapy. He stresses the importance of motivation, persistence, a supportive partner and realistic expectations.
