Impotence drug improves urinary symptoms
Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
Sildenafil can relieve the symptoms associated with prostate enlargement. Previous research has shown that the drug sildenafil citrate is effective in treating impotence or erectile dysfunction. Often, impotence is linked to enlargement of the prostate gland which can also cause an obstruction to the flow of urine.
Researchers at Northwestern University now show that sildenafil also helps with these urinary symptoms. They carried out a placebo-controlled study of men aged 45 or older who had impotence linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition where the prostate is enlarged and obstructs the flow of urine.
Those who were on sildenafil experienced a significant improvement in erectile function as well as a better flow of urine. They also reported improvements in their self-esteem and quality of life.
