Men should take to their bikes to avoid cancer!
Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
Taking more exercise could help crack the growing problem of male obesity in the UK.
It's not generally realized that obesity is a risk factor for cancer - perhaps accounting for as many as one in eight deaths. So it's worrying that Cancer Research UK, the leading charity, has found that rates of obesity in Britain are now approaching those of the US among men. Twenty per cent are obese and another 50 per cent are overweight.
The problem is that younger men are not eating healthily these days and older men are not taking enough exercise. In fact nearly half of all British men don't take the recommended 30 minutes on most days. To highlight the issue, Cancer Research UK is inviting men to 'get on their bikes' and join a series of cycle rides throughout the country. The idea is to promote the idea of exercise as being as important in beating cancer as giving up smoking.
