Multifocal lenses offer many advantages after cataract surgery, according to a new review.
After removal of an eye lens that has been clouded by cataract, it's possible to insert a new plastic lens. There is now a choice between the old monofocal lens and the newer multifocal lens. A new analysis of the evidence on the two type of lenses from researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, may help people make decisions.

They find that 26 to 47 per cent of those with multifocals are independent of glasses, which is what many people want, compared to one to 11 per cent of those with monofocals. But those with multifocals are more likely to have problems with visual contrast and some see 'halos' around objects. If people are motivated towards remaining free of spectacles or contact lenses, though having multifocal lens replacements after cataract, they may have to accept some reduction in the quality of their vision.
