Losing Weight Could Reduce Cancer Risk

According to new research from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), several types of cancer are linked to obesity. Estimates released by the AICR indicate the more than 100,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in the United States each year by getting rid of excess body fat.

The AICR has presented convincing evidence that obesity is linked to several types of cancer, including cancer of the esophagus, pancreas, kidney, colon, and uterus. Researchers also said it was probable that excess belly fat is a cause of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Although it is not known exactly how excess fat leads to cancer, one possible explanation is that fat produces hormones that could play a role in promoting cancer cells. Studies also show that fat releases harmful chemicals that increase oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to DNA changes and cancer cell growth.

The link between obesity and heart disease or diabetes is well-known. Based on this new research, weight management plays an important role in cancer prevention, but public awareness of the link between obesity and cancer needs to be increased. It may be that, by losing weight, we can prevent many cases of cancer.
