From muscle strength to longevity genes to self-care strategies to
the proteins involved in Alzheimer's Disease, aging research casts
a wide net. The few examples given in this book reflect gerontology's
range and diversity, but they also reflect its ultimate and unifying
goal - to improve quality of life in the later years.
The factors that contribute to quality of life - health and health
services, social supports, independence, and others - can be understood
and improved only through research. Without new knowledge obtained
through research, America's growing older population will have to
accept partial cures and inadequate services, health care costs will
continue to rise, and the number of older people in institutions will
increase. Research is the fundamental first step toward better health
and greater independence as America's older population burgeons. |
