IANA, Second International Meeting
Albuquerque, NM, USA
Sheraton Hotel, Old Town
July 10-12, 2003

The International Academy on Nutrition and Aging (IANA) decided to organize the 2nd International Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA because it is the home of the New Mexico Aging Process Study (NMAPS). The NMAPS was one of the first longitudinal studies on Nutrition and Aging, started in 1979 by James S. Goodwin, M.D. and Philip J. Garry Ph.D. and supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Since 1979 the NMAPS has produced over 180 publications examining the role of nutrition in the aging process.

The 2nd IANA meeting will be organized in collaboration with the Aging Successfully Program, Saint-Louis University (John Morley, M.B.). The Geriatric Program at Saint-Louis University is one of the major clinical and research center in the world. The Geriatric Program at Saint-Louis has been collaborating for many years with the NMAPS in Albuquerque and with the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Gerontology, University of Toulouse, France.

Large parts of the meeting will be devoted to linkages between nutrition and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. There is now more and more evidence that diet, vitamins B12, B6, C, and E, homocysteine, anti-oxidant status, diabetes, cholesterol, ApoE4 are related to cognitive decline in the elderly. Other topics include recommended dietary intake for aging successfully, frailty, nutrition assessment, body composition, sarcopenia and nutrition in long-term care. Researchers from around the world will be present at this meeting.
