Second IANA Congress - Albuquerque (New Mexico-USA) - July 2003

1st IANA Congress: Review

The first congress of the International Academy of Nutrition and Aging (IANA), held in Paris, was an undoubted success. It was attended by 600 nutritionists and geriatricians, as well as by representatives of the pharmaceutical and agroalimentary industries, from all over the world.

Over 100 presentations addressed the following topics: the nutritional needs of the elderly, nutrition and cognitive functions, diabetes, cholesterol, osteoporosis, malnutrition, appetite stimulants, re-nutrition, nutrition and quality of life, nutrition and longevity. Among them, the lectures by Professors R.K. Chandra (Newfoundland), C. Chumlea (Yellow Springs), P.J. Garry (Albuquerque), P.H. Hello (Geneva), P. Meunier (Lyon), J.E. Morley (St Louis), A. Sinclair (Birmingham) and B. Vellas (Toulouse) were particularly appreciated.

In his inaugural lecture Professor C. Chumlea reported that the Universities of Toulouse, New Mexico and Wright State, which have now collaborated for more than 10 years, will continue working together on two projects: 1) The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging (JNHA), indexed in Medline, 2) The International Academy of Nutrition and Aging, whose principal objective, in addition to the organization of scientific meetings, is to link up the main research centers in a network which--by jointly exploiting their various skills--increases their overall strength in this field.

The award for the best poster went to Professor Timothy Kwok (Hong Kong) for the quality of his work on weight changes in Alzheimer disease.

The abstracts of this first congress have been printed as a JNHA special issue which you can order by connecting to the following web site http://www.serdi-fr.com/ .
