Slide 16 of 16

The percentage of elderly persons without protective antibodies following vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis is already relatively high in the first year after vaccination. It increases steadily afterwards. In contrast, in the young group almost everybody is protected for a period of at least 6 years following vaccination.
From these data one can conclude that new vaccination strategies for the elderly will have to be introduced. Shorter vaccination intervals should be considered and antibody titers checked frequently. The pharmaceutical industry will have to concentrate on developing new vaccines specifically designed to fulfill the needs of the aging immune system.
