Cloning is essentially a laboratory method of producing offspring almost
genetically identical to its parent, bypassing ordinary reproductive methods.
Fraught with ethical controversy and still facing significant technical
hurdles, cloning technologies, nevertheless, hold out the promise of cell,
tissue and organ regeneration - that is developing healthy nerve cells,
skin or even a whole kidney or heart that could be used therapeutically,
implanted or grafted without fear of rejection. As scientists pursue this
research, often constrained by government decrees, these prospects, while
tantalizing, remain far in the future.
