Can Cutting Calories Increase Longevity?

Why is caloric restriction important?

Caloric restriction is the only experimental intervention yet studied that can conclusively increase longevity--in experimental animals. Caloric restriction has been shown to increase both the average and the maximal life spans in paramecia, worms, spiders, insects, and rodents. Non-human primates are now being tested, but the outcome of these tests will not be known for a couple of decades (since monkeys have relatively long life spans compared to other animals).
