I've had a big knot on my right hand for the last few months. It doesn't hurt or anything, but I just want to know what it is, and what can I do about it.

Ganglion cysts are very common lumps that appear in the hand and wrist. The most common location is on the back of the wrist but they also occur on the palm side of the wrist, the far joint of the finger and at the base of the finger.
 

Most ganglions require nothing more than reassuring the patient that it is only a simple cyst. Treatment may be warranted if the cyst is painful, limits activity, or its appearance is unacceptable to the patient. In the old days, the doctor would recommend - hitting the ganglion hard with the Family Bible', but today aspiration (using a needle to suck out the contents) or simple surgical excision is preferred.
