Question

I'm a passionate golfer, but it doesn't give me as much exercise as I'd hoped. We have to ride in carts, rather than walk. I'm 57, male, somewhat overweight, but otherwise healthy (I think).

Should I be doing additional exercises?

Answer

You're right - golf isn't a very good form of exercise, although it ought to help relieve day-to-day stresses you may experience. (Of course if you're highly competitive and don't always win, it may actually increase your stress!) If you're overweight at 57, you certainly ought to be exercising more. And, this has a hidden benefit - your golf game will improve!

A year ago a study was reported where 19 golfers between 55 and 80 were given an 8-week strength and flexibility program; 12 other golfers, who had no additional exercise program, acted as controls. It was found that their club-head speed improved from an average of 85 MPH to 87.1 MPH with the help of the exercise program, compared with the controls. So, we advise you to get to the gym and set up a regular training program that includes aerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises. This will help you reduce weight, improve your general health, and win more games of golf. Don't forget to check with your doctor before starting an exercise program, though!
