Pain behind the eyes may be a symptom of different types of headaches. The more common cause for pain behind the eyes are dry eyes and sinusitis but there are other causes to your pain behind your eye.

There can be many causes for pain occurring behind the eyes. The more common include: sinusitis, dry eyes, orbital inflammatory syndrome, scleritis, optic neuritis, and cranial nerve palsy.
Sinusitis: this is an inflammation (generally an infection) of the sinuses. The ethmoidal and
sphenoidal sinuses are usually involved. The pain is very similar to a headache and can worsen with certain head movements. A CT scan is often needed to confirm this, but it can often be diagnosed by a good history and exam by your doctor. Treatment requires antibiotics for about 10-21 days.
Dry eyes: This is an extremely common problem. Symptoms can include sharp, stabbing pains as well as chronic scratchiness and burning. Treatment generally starts with artificial tears, which can be bought at any grocery or drugstore. Preserved brands (i.e. those containing a preservative) may be used up to 6 times a day. Non-preserved brands may be used as often as needed. Some patients require a procedure to block the tear duct drainage openings, so tear fluid stays longer in the eye. Some patients have very watery eyes despite an underlying dry eye condition. Your ophthalmologist can do tests to determine if this is a cause of your eye pain..
Orbital inflammatory syndrome: this is an idiopathic (i.e. cause unknown) inflammation of the muscles or other contents of the orbit (eye socket). It requires a CT scan for diagnosis, and steroids for treatment.
Scleritis: this is an inflammatory condition that generally causes red eyes and pain. It's usually associated with another, generalized disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or shingles. If your eyes have not been red, then this condition is unlikely. Treatment involves the use of steroids and the use of anti-inflammatory medications.
Optic neuritis: this serious inflammatory condition can affect the nerve to the eye as well as the muscles that lie close to the optic nerve. Generally, the vision becomes blurry and sometimes color perception problems will be noticed. It responds to steroid injections, but can recur and may be a precursor for multiple sclerosis.
Cranial nerve palsies: these may be due to interference with the blood supply to the nerves serving the muscles that control the eyes. They can be quite painful. Generally patients will also suffer from double vision in addition to eye and head pain. Diabetics and patients with high blood pressure are at highest risk for this condition.
One must also mention headache and neuralgia-type disorders that can cause pain around the eyes. You should see an ophthalmologist or a neurologist, in the first instance.

For the last few months I've had, off an on, pain behind right eye bothering me especially when trying to focus up close. Discomfort is accompanied by a light crackling sound behind the eye/nose area. Gone through some antibiotics an drops but pain still comes and goes. I've discovered that repeated warm compresses with a tea bag helps enormously and makes the pain and swelling go away. Have made another appointment with doctor to find out more and get to the bottom of this.

I have pain in my left eye for over 5 years. It feels like a rock in my eye and it hurts to move it. I have to use eye drops and tylenol with the red pills to help ease the pain. It comes and goes. Using fish oil sometimes help. Eye doctors cant find anything wrong. Keep saying dry eyes.
Seriously! My eye socket and temple feel as if they have road rash inside, especially when I cough, and for several minutes after I cough. I feel as if my eye will explode if I don't push in on my eyeball and temple while I cough, and I wear sunglasses 24/7 to reduce eye strain. I have been diagnosed with ascites, and have to get an abdominal and pelvic c.t. scan today to determine the cause. The eye thing is a new development. Why do I feel as though I may be doomed. Please write something funny to help us all see the light at the end of the cheeseburger, won't you?

My left eyeball becomes hard as a marble and I get as eyeball headache as well as pain in my neck also on the left side. These eyeball aches last for hours and have become a daily affair.
Sometimes I wake up in the morning with such aches but if not - then they will occur during the day.

I recently noticed a cracking sound (similar to the sound when you crack a finger joint) when i press on my closed left eye. There is no pain at all, just a clicking sound any time i press on it.
I got punched a few times around the eye about 1 month ago, got a slight bruising, but has been fine for weeks now.
What could this cracking be?
I had a similar issue after getting jumped and hit repeatedly. An MRI showed that my eye socket had been fractured/broken. The doc put me on antibiotics to combat infection and did some tests to make sure the bone fragments weren't floating around. After the bruising went away I healed up in about 6-8 weeks. Not sure if your case is that severe, but an MRI will let you know.

Have your doctor test for (SLE) Lupus with and ANA (antinuclear antibody) test and Lyme's disease. Some of your syptoms sound autoimmune related.

I used to have pain behind one eye. It was a sinus problems. A sort of pressure behind the eye. I tried to sleep with a humidifier in my bedroom and it was a bit better. Today, I sometimes have pain behind just one eye, when it occurs, it take a decongestant and it helps.

for the last two days, i experienced a slight pain behind my left eye and behind my left temple. To feel better I pressed on the temple, now may pain behind my left eye is gone and my doctor told me that it could be due to the fact that i work infront of a computer all day.
Pain behind right eye or pain behind left eye can be caused in most cases by conjunctivitis, it's the most common cause of pain behind eye and eye problems. It can also be caused by a abrasion of the cornea. A blepharitis can also cause eye pain as well as a sinusitis and migraines. There are other causes to your eye pain, if your pain is persistent, you really need to see a doctor.
