I have a friend who told me that I don't need to take my statin drug - I can lower my cholesterol level by eating blueberries.
Is this true, or hogwash?
Blueberries are known to contain pterostilbene, which is a chemical antioxidant, similar to resveratrol, another antioxidant found in grape skins, and therefore in red wine. Studies in rats have shown that pterostilbene lowers cholesterol levels. However, findings in rats don't always translate to humans. Although antioxidants do a lot of good, they aren't specifically effective in reducing cholesterol levels in humans.
We suggest you continue with your statin drug, which we assume your doctor felt was necessary for your health. Statins are, in general, extremely effective and safe; this has been shown in studies in humans. Of course, there's no harm in eating the occasional blueberry muffin, as well.
