Question

Could you give me an idea of the risks that occur with overweight? I'm looking for information to encourage my fiancé to lose weight.

Answer

Being overweight is one step on the way to being obese. Does your fiancé know his BMI (body mass index)? He can find out by clicking on the first link below. If it's between 25 and 30, he's overweight; if it's over 30, he's obese.

Being overweight (yes, "overweight", as well as "obese") increases the risk of coronary heart disease (which can lead to a heart attack), congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, depression, deep vein thrombosis, osteoarthritis, insomnia, indigestion, impotence, and hip- and knee-replacement surgery. That should be enough to get him started on a lifestyle improvement.
