Oral health is often taken for granted, but is an essential part of our everyday lives. Good oral health enhances our ability to speak, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a world of feelings and emotions through facial expressions. However, mouth and throat diseases, which range from cavities to oral cancer, cause pain and disability for millions of Americans each year.
Good oral health is not just about brushing your teeth. There are certain risk behaviors that increase the chance of developing an oral disease. These modifiable risk behaviors — oral hygiene practices, sugar consumption (amount, frequency and type) as well as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption — may not only affect oral health negatively, but also impact on general quality of life.
