Reiter's syndrome, now referred to as reactive arthritis, is condition characterized by arthritis, urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), and conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctivae of the eye). Reactive arthritis is typically triggered by a gastrointestinal or urogenital infection. Approximately 15-50% of those with reactive arthritis experience recurrent bouts of arthritis, and 15-30% develop chronic arthritis. The mainstay of treatment for the joint symptoms associated with reactive arthritis is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
