How can you eat enough iodine to prevent hypothyroidism?
The thyroid gland requires iodide for its hormone synthesis. Adequate dietary intake of iodine is therefore essential. Water, as well as food, can provide iodine, and when natural levels of iodine are insufficient, the iodination of water, and food products such as bread or salt, ensure adequate intake. Dietary supplements are also potential sources of iodine. In Western Europe, a level of 200 micrograms a day is considered optimal.
Note that both iodine excess and iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism. We therefore strongly recommend that you take medical advice before relying on nutrition for prophylaxis or as an adjunct to therapy.
