Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. recently announced that they were stopping developing of an experimental drug for Alzheimer’s disease called semagacestat after studies of the drug showed that it was worsening the conditions of people with Alzheimer’s and was associated with an increased risk of skin cancer.

Alzheimer’s has been confounding drug makers for a long time, and the condition is still not well-understood. Eli Lilly’s experimental Alzheimer’s drug is the latest of several promising compounds that have failed in recent years. However, Eli Lilly does have another experimental Alzheimer’s drug in the late stages of development that was not affected by this recent decision.
As our population ages and lives longer, the need for effective treatments for Alzheimer’s is growing. As pharmaceutical companies continue to search for better Alzheimer’s drugs, it may be wise to consider the words of Benjamin Franklin, who said, ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ So, what can you do to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s or other dementias? Decades of brain fitness research have shown that participating in rigorous cognitive activity over time is linked with an up to 63 percent reduced risk of developing dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
