Muscle training improves some aspects of lung function in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), damage to lung tissue causes breathlessness, fatigue and extreme disability. How can these patients be helped? Researchers in Spain now report on the first study of respiratory muscle training in a small group of people, average age 66, with COPD.

Half of them did supervised breathing exercises for 30 minutes a day, five times a week for five weeks. The other group did 'sham' exercise and acted as a control. After this time, respiratory muscle strength and endurance had improved after the special exercises. But there was no corresponding change in either walking distance or maximal oxygen exchange.
