What kind of procedure (operation) do they do for diverticulitis? I am suffering severely, and diet does not help. What is my alternative?
If your attacks are severe or frequent, the doctor may advise surgery. The surgeon opens the abdomen and removes the affected part of the colon. The remaining sections of the colon are rejoined. This type of surgery, called colon resection, aims to keep attacks from coming back and to prevent complications. Nowadays, this can often be done successfully using a key-hole approach (laparoscopy).
Perhaps you need to know more about your condition and the correct diet required. A high fiber diet is advised to promote regular elimination and to increases fecal excretion. It is also very important to drink enough water - 8 cups per day is recommended.
The websites below provides information on appropriate diets for diverticulitis. But you should discuss the possible need for surgery with your physician.
