Question

My grandmother fell and broke her hip, and has been in hospital. What are her chances of making a full recovery?

Answer

The recovery after a hip fracture and subsequent operation depends very much on the previous clinical state of the person. In other words, if your grandmother was hail and hearty and completely independent before she broke her hip, then she is very likely to get back to somewhere near that condition after her operation. However if she was already frail and finding it difficult to manage, then she is going to find it even more difficult to manage subsequently. Indeed you suggest that she needs a lot of assistance and may even require 2 people to move her from her bed to a chair, or perhaps with help to walk.
