In the most recent issue of Cell (June 27, 2008), scientists reported the discovery of a new gene linked to Alzheimer disease . This gene, called CALHM1, may increase the risk of developing the most common form of Alzheimer's disease by 45% in those who inherit a particular form of it. According to the researchers, the CALHM1 gene seems to inhibit the ability of brain cells to absorb calcium.
Additional studies are needed to more firmly establish the link between CALHM1 and Alzheimer's risk, but, if the relationship is confirmed, this gene represents a potential target for treating or preventing some cases of Alzheimer's disease.
