A different way of treating hemorrhoids offers patients a better way of dealing with this painful condition.
Hemorrhoids are varicose veins which protrude from the anus. Having them is both embarrassing and painful. They can be treated with ointments, suppositories and physician-supplied rubber band ligation. If these don't give relief, the hemorrhoids can be removed by surgery - but this can be very painful.
Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have been developing an alternative to this operation; it's known as Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH) and it involves pushing the hemorrhoids back into the rectum to their original position. PPH is not dissimilar to a facelift and the re-positioning reduces blood flow to the hemorrhoids, so they shrink and die painlessly.
PPH can be done on an outpatient basis. Those who have the new procedure are usually back to normal life within a very short time.
