A new survey shows that only insect repellents containing DEET offer effective protection against mosquito-borne disease.
It's essential to protect yourself against mosquitoes to avoid the spread of West Nile virus and malaria when you're on the move. But which product to choose - when there are so many on the market? A study by researchers at the University of Florida suggests you should always look for an insect repellent containing DEET - a chemical which stops mosquitoes from biting you.
DEET is also effective against ticks that carry Lyme disease, which is another serious health problem. Compared to botanicals and other products, only DEET seems to offer long-lasting protection after a single application, the researchers say. DEET has been used safely since 1957 - this new study suggests that it's earned its place as an insect repellent.
