There's no reason why people with diabetes can't enjoy a celebration and still keep their condition under control.
In diabetes, the body either doesn't produce insulin or doesn't use it properly. So there is a problem in storing blood sugar and this may lead to many health complications, such as kidney or heart disease. It's essential that someone with diabetes follows a sensible diet, not too high in sugars, calories or fats. But there's no reason why they can't celebrate the winter holidays like everyone else, says Dr Riccardo Perfetti of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which runs one of the most well-respected diabetes clinics in the US.
Make sure you find time for exercise - even a series of brisk brief walks, if you are busy, to counteract the effects of any rich sugary foods. Take medicines regularly and make time to monitor your blood sugar. You can still eat your favourite foods, but keep the portions small. Go for no fat or low fat options, where you can, and gravitate toward the fresh fruit and raw vegetables at a buffet. And always remember - you control the diabetes, it doesn't control you.
